About Mariana

Mariana is a mining town by pioneering nature. It was the first village, the first capital, the seat of the first bishopric and first city to be designed in Minas Gerais. Moreover, the first post office in the state, then known as "Mail Walking", was installed in 1730. Mariana is quite known for its churches and historic mansions. In the beautiful square of Minas Gerais are three historical monuments: the former Town Hall and Jail, the San Francisco of Assisi Church and the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The city also has eco-tourism options including many waterfalls, such as the Waterfall Brumado (in the district of the same name), Waterfall Serrinha (on Passing Mariana), Crystal Waterfall, Waterfall Prainha (in Santo Antonio neighborhood) , among others. Another must-see attraction is the Smokey Mary Train Vale, which was a partnership project of Vale do Rio Doce with the Municipal Governments of Mariana and Ouro Preto. The tourist train resumed operations regurlamente from April 2006. Mariana Railway Station was completely renovated and today is also a tourist city and works as a library. Besides the natural beauty and historical attractions, Mariana houses complete infrastructure to receive tourists with many hotels and guesthouses as well as bars and restaurants.
